DETERMINATION - THE KEY TO SUCCESS

I think the key words in the path to success are: DETERMINATION and SELF DISCIPLINE. Others are FOCUS and a SINGLE-MINDEDNESS (in pursuit of one's goals). The words 'determination' and (by association) 'ruthlessness', suggest a person who wants success and power for it's own sake. This is another sort of obsession. However, a desire for power, riches and fame may have virtually nothing to do with it. By the way, I feel that not all successful people and business executives are ruthless - they are not all "money grabbing corporate raiders". Most of them are "normal and good family men", who have perfectly natural reactions in that they hate firing employees. "Soft gentle souls!" Determination is often at its greatest, when a person is enslaved by an idea and wants to see the idea work. There is a further sort of determination: the determination to see things through, to finish the job. For example, a compulsion to qualify for the PGA golf tour in America, to finish a building, or in my case to finish writing this manuscript...and then get it published... which is the hardest part of all. Especially with the way I write!

I suppose all these characteristics are somewhat abnormal; because so-called "normal" people are more passive and less focused than us "obsessive types". They are regarded as being less "mad" by the majority of the public, who engage in more ordinary activities and have more "normal" occupations. This thought leads me on to another question: Is the top-most level of success the only one worth having, or is it sufficient to merely enjoy sport for it's own sake (even the professionals)? Does every player entering Wimbledon really think he or she is going to win the Championship? Or is it success itself just to play in the Wimbledon tournament? How realistic is the vision of success to YOU? It all depends on how you define success for yourself...which is the thought with which I introduced this chapter. I believe that a strong SENSE OF DIRECTION or PURPOSE IN LIFE is a very important ingredient for success. So too is a persistent personality.

To be successful in whatever endeavour one chooses, first of all requires a great of talent. It might be latent, waiting to be uncovered. Perhaps, you are not even aware of it. I wonder how many budding Ayrton Senna's and Michael Schumachers there are around, who just have never had the opportunity (mainly in the form of money) to race cars? Motor racing is certainly the "ultimate rich boy's sport". To finally reap the rewards of success, obviously talent has to be there on the long slow road to success - and at the time of success...but has it always been there? Chess geniuses, athletes, tennis players, architects, athletes, scientists, dress designers and advertising creative directors. These "creative types"! There can be talent deep within; but there has to be hard work and training before the talent bears fruition - so that it can succeed against (all) others...and this often takes a great deal of time to bear fruit.

I believe in life it's firstly a matter of finding your "niche", then unlocking your unique talents...and finding it is the most difficult part. You may not even be aware you have any special gifts. That is the "key" to success. As I mentioned, I found whatever little ones I had through a process of serendipity...and it's probably my one and only talent! My writing, I mean. Once uncovered, it's then a question of building on it and maximizing it. Maria Callas, the opera singer with "a voice like an angel" put a great deal of effort into maximizing her talent. Sometimes a phenomenol talent, like a Juan Manuel Fangio*, Jim Clark or Ayrton Senna soars above all others; but in most cases it's the effort and total dedication put in to make the most of one's natural talents, that puts an individual into the realm of a superstar - someone who is on a different level, a cut above the best of the rest, us 'mere mortals'.

* Fangio won the World Driver's Championship five times.

One can sometimes substitute hard work, training, experience and strategy for flair. Nice word that 'flair'. Could be a girl's name. Some detectives are like "Mr Plod", while a few sleuths have the natural insight of a Sherlock Holmes. Most others have to get results through hard detailed work in uncovering cases. I don't yet know whether I'm a "natural" writer or a methodical plodder, a "gatherer and passer-onner of useless information" through a great deal of effort. Perhaps only time will tell! I might have mentioned before (once, twice or ten times) that this manuscript has been written for anyone: from the most lowly amateur to the real 'pros' in the sporting world. So no matter how lowly your abilities, make the most of them.

As I mentioned already, a positive attitude to life is all-important. A positive attitude says that your natural talent can be maximized. It also says that without further effort, natural talent will be wasted. I do like repeating myself: for emphasis primarily and as a sign of encroaching senility too. Sometimes persistent effort alone won't succeed in getting you to the top - only sheer talent will do that... together with consistent effort to keep you at "the top of the tree".

Never mind - JUST TRY TO IMPROVE yourself and simply DO YOUR BEST at all times.

Deep Sea Fishing Off The Oregon Coast

In my state of Oregon, when someone says, "deep sea fishing", everyone just assumes that Salmon fishing is what is really meant. Deep sea fishing has been slowing evolving, however, to mean fishing for other kinds of fish. This slow change has happened at the same time that Salmon have gradually declined in numbers. I have been fishing for Salmon several times, but I have yet to be successful, so I'm going to keep trying.

My day started at 6:00 AM, when our windup alarm went off in our tent. Our little party consisted of me, my dad, and my Uncle Bob.

We had set up our tent in a public campground only a couple of miles from the harbor of Garibaldi, Oregon. Garibaldi is a small town situated on the Tillamook Bay along the Oregon coast. Garebaldi has the perfect location for a harbor and a marina because the waters are relatively calm in the bay.

It was still dark, so getting up wasn't easy. As we pulled out of the campground, several cars sped past us going in the other direction. I found out later that these were the charter boat captains driving out to the jetty, so they could see what the bar conditions were like.

Our charter boat was about 25 or 30 feet long. It looked big to me. I was used to my grandfather's 14 ' boat. There were eight of us fishing plus the captain and a high school kid who baited the hooks and netted the fish.

As we approached the bar, the captain ran back, lifted the cover off the engine and looked around. He had a very serious look on his face. That's when it hit me, "uh, oh, going over the bar is serious business". I couldn't believe the size of the waves at the bar, they towered over us to about ten feet. I felt pretty sheepish when the high school kid said that the bar was pretty good that day.

Once we got into the ocean, the waves were only two or three feet and there was no wind. After we got out into the ocean, we were happy to see that we wouldn't be dealing with the wind. but after awhile, a little wind would have been nice. The boat we were on was a cabin cruiser with the captain's position up on top. All of the exhaust was routed thru a pipe that went up through the center of the boat. This arrangement was probably ok when it was windy, but on our day the exhaust was sucked down to the passenger area. We all got a little green because it took an hour and a half to get to the captain's favorite fishing "spot".

When we reached the captain's "spot", the high school kid handed us each a Salmon rod with the bait already attached. We fished for about an hour without any bites. Since there didn't seem to be any Salmon around, the captain had the high school kid give us bottom fishing gear. We caught lots of fish with the bottom fishing gear.

I actually caught a couple of Sea Bass. Another guy caught a Rockfish. The Rockfish was really strange. It looked prehistoric. It was really strange with funny looking fins and an orange tongue. Very strange indeed!

Conquer the 7 Leading Causes of Stress

In 1967, Thomas H. Holmes and Richard H. Rahe, from the University of Washington, did a study on the connection between significant life events and illness. As part of that study, they compiled a chart of the major causes of stress. That chart, which contained 43 causes of stress in 1967, was updated to 55 causes in 2006. Apparently, society is finding more causes to feel stressed.

If you knew the leading causes of stress in your life, would you take action to eradicate them? Can you eradicate stress - or is it an inoperable condition that will be with you all of your life, possibly causing your eventual death?
Which Is Your Leading Cause of Stress?

1. Finances

Most studies agree that finances are a leading cause of stress. In an online poll conducted in 2005 by LifeCare, Inc., 23 percent of respondents named finances as the leading cause of stress in their lives. Financial stress has led the list in many modern polls.

Some who name finances as the leading cause of stress cite major purchases they have to make, such as a home or car. Others are stressed by a loss of income, or mounting credit card debt. For some, financial stress will eventuate in bankruptcy. While college students stress over paying for an education, Baby Boomers and older senior citizens find that retirement income can be a major cause of stress.

2. Work

Closely tied to finances as a cause of stress is work. Our jobs or careers seem to cause constant stress. In the LifeCare poll, 21 percent of those responding listed this as the leading cause of stress in life.

How is the workplace a cause of stress? We worry about getting and keeping adequate employment. We worry about new types of work or new responsibilities. We struggle to climb a career ladder, overwhelmed by the demands. Work conditions may change, or we may have interpersonal trouble at work. Students, especially teenagers and college age students, cite school work as a cause of stress. Sometimes, work stress is brought on by others. Sometimes, we bring it on ourselves.

3. Family

Family, wonderful though each member may be, is also a leading cause of stress. Arguments erupt with a spouse or other family member. Parents divorce. Children marry. The ebb and flow of family life is filled with stress. A child moves out - an aging parent moves in.

Family health is also a leading cause of stress. A sick family member, a serious injury, pregnancy, miscarriage, or abortion all cause stress. Family changes of other kinds bring stress, too. Adoption, relocation, and job changes for just one family member can cause stress for all.

4. Personal Concerns

Personal concerns that are only indirectly created by others are another top cause of stress. Lack of control tops the list of personal concerns. Every human has a deep-seated desire for control over his or her own life. When control is weak or missing in a given area, we experience stress. To many people, a lack of control over their own time is a leading cause of stress. We want to determine when we do tasks around the home, or at work. Holding a job, participating in the children's carpool to school, driving family to soccer practices, shopping, and scout meetings while trying to keep the household running can create major stress. You would like to control your time, rather than let others' demands control it, but that is not always possible.

We may be involved in legal proceedings that cause stress. We may be wrestling with a bad habit. We may be going through changes. Personal change of any kind can be a cause of stress.

5. Personal Health and Safety

Others withdraw and become recluses. Either way, the demands on time, finances, and emotions can cause ongoing stress.

Probably the most wrenching cause of stress is the death of a loved one or close friend. Even the death of a pet can be stressful. Children are always a source of stress for parents, but when a child dies, the stress is overwhelming. The same is true when a lifetime spouse passes on.

Causes of stress change as we age. The stressed child who threw tantrums becomes a young student, stressed by the school bully. The young student becomes a teenager, stressed by acne, hormones, and dating. The teenager becomes a young adult trying to handle the stresses of leaving home, adjusting to college life, and managing finances. Life progresses to first jobs, marriage, children, and so on. Even if you move to a secluded cabin in the woods, stress will follow you.
